Symposium: Sound art in public space

The aim of this symposium is to open up a discussion about sound art in public spaces with a focus on the meaning and effect of sound art in a site-specific context, as well as the framework around the creation of the art works.
Sound art has enjoyed great attention as an area of artistic practice for a number of years, and artistic work with sound can be found both in exhibition contexts and in works developed for a site-specific context. However, one area that seems to be constantly under-illuminated is the potential of sound art in public space.
We miss a deeper understanding of the works of sound art and the way they interact, interfere and reason with the environment in which they are situated.
-How do we understand the effect of these works? How can you as an artist work with the auditory in public space? And not least, how do we create the framework for an artistically experimental approach to working with sound in the public space?
With the participation of international artists, curators and other actors, the symposium will seek to open up new perspectives on the issue of sound art in the public space.
There is a need to clarify which framework supports the artistic experimentation and development that lies before the work-focused realization phase. In addition, there is a need to discuss and investigate the work’s effect and the life the work has after it has been completed and becomes an integral part of a surrounding environment. This becomes even more relevant in relation to sound art works that are created as part of a site-specific context in the public space. What changes does the work create? What potentials does sound-based works hold to provide new aesthetic experiences, call for reflection, critical dialogues, etc.? And finally: How do we measure its effect?
The symposium is organized by Sound Art Lab and OFSAK (Office for Sound Art Knowledge) in collaboration with Struer Tracks Sound Art Bienniale and Sound Hub Denmark.
The symposium is supported by Nordisk Kulturfond, Nordic Culture Point and Danish Arts Foundation.
